Sited in a custom built habitat, this cam takes you into the busy world of the small mammals that live in Wild Meadows, my home patch in Somerset. We put a mixture of foods into the log from time to time, which attracts wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis), field voles (Microtus agrestis), weasels (Mustela nivalis) and brown rats (Rattus norvegicus).
The food also attracts a range of bugs and these, in turn, are a magnet for insectivorous shrews. We have seen both common shrews (Sorex araneus) and water shrews (Neomys fodiens) visit regularly.
We use visible light in the habitat by day, which produces colour images, but by night we switch to infra red light, which is invisible to the various creatures that visit and produces a black and white image on the camera.
