Summit Extreme (Batura) Jacket by Rab So, you’re out on a walk. It’s warm and dry, with no obvious sign that things are about to change. But you’re in Britain (or just about anywhere else in the northern hemisphere!). About an hour into the journey, the Arctic has decided to pay you a visit, with grey skies and a chill wind. Did you bring a waterproof? Of course you did. Are you cold? Of course you are. Unless of course you packed one of these neat little wonders into your day sack.

This down filled puffer waistcoat from RAB is a complete wonder. It weighs just 35 grams, squeezes down to nothing in its own stuff sack (and in this form, by the way, it's super padding for camera kit in your bag). But it punches well above its weight for warmth.

Mine goes with me everywhere, and more often than not gets put to good use. Because it's so light, it's not really designed to go through bramble bushes or barbed wire fences, so be careful if you want to avoid losing your stuffing.
