I've spent many years hoping to find the ideal all round field jacket, and believe that at last, I have it.
Aigle is a company which combines functionality with style, a very elusive combination.
There are certain criteria that a field jacket must meet for me.
First of all it must be a good colour for a mixture of habitats. The deep green of the Aigle range (though there is a choice of colours for some of the products) blends in perfectly in woodland and many open field habitats.
Secondly, it must be quiet. The soft fabric on this coat is rustle free, so that any movements I make don’t draw the attention of keen eared creatures.
Thirdly, it must be waterproof. This is often where “silent” jackets stumble, the fabric becoming waterlogged, heavy, and ultimately leaking. Not so with the Aigle Edimbourg jacket. The breathable waterproof membrane beneath the microfibre outer is light, and very effective, whilst the outer shell takes on the minimum water, even during the heaviest downpour. I have used the gear extensively in the Scottish highlands (pretty wet), and always emerged dry at the end of the day. Fourthly, it must be windproof. This kit may not be designed for arctic gales, but it certainly stands up to very strong winds without chilling.
Fifth and last warmth. A tricky one this because conditions change depending on how much exercise you are doing and the environment you are in. Aigle have worked hard to create a really versatile coat, and have come up with a modular system which deals with most conditions. The sleeveless fleece liner (supplied with the jacket) can be firmly zipped into the jacket to add extra warmth when and where it's needed. |
